UMA Precision Machining has acquired a new Citizen L20 Type XII sliding headstock lathe for Bone Screw manufacturing and complex machining. This nine axis machine will have a B axis Thread Whirler for precise and accurate lead angles for any bone screw. This capability also allows for lead angle changes across a tapering thread, resulting in better finishes and more accurate parts.

UMA is projecting to have the machine into production mid-January 2017. For many years now, the team at UMA has prototyped and handled shorter runs of Bone Screws by cutting custom inserts on their in-house EDM, and by segmenting the threads into multiple passes. They are going to apply all of this technology and knowledge into Thread Whirling, where the screws are cut in a single pass. Customers can expect reduced cycle times, less variations across the thread, and a better part.
